Who benefits from our products, and when do you need them? Many patients who undergo orthopedic surgery may benefit from our products, which aim to stimulate new bone formation in the body.
Orthopedic surgery generally involves metal and plastic devices that are implanted to restore the stability and strength of our bone structure, such as in the spine, hip, arms, legs, feet and hands. However, together with these devices, surgeons want to restore some or all of the natural bone mass that the patient has lost. Your own natural bone is the best remedy to withstand the pressures of everyday life on your skeletal system.
Traditionally, surgeons have used bone from the patient as “bone grafts” in the area the primary surgery is being performed. “Autograft” means tissue implanted from one part of the body to another in the same individual. The bone graft is often taken from the iliac crest, or the hip bone. Harvesting this bone requires a surgical procedure in addition to the procedure that the bone will be used in. There are several drawbacks to this approach. First, your hip bone does not offer an unlimited supply of bone, i.e., there is only so much bone the surgeon can remove without creating another problem. Second, the harvesting procedure is painful. Although in most patients the pain will wear off with time, in approximately 15% of patients, the harvesting procedure causes lasting pain. These patients consider the pain from harvesting more severe than the pain caused by the primary surgery.
IsoTis’ innovative products are based on donor bone, or “bone graft substitutes,” which are used as substitutes for autografts. To date, IsoTis’ bone graft substitutes have been used safely and effectively in more than 250,000 patients. By using our products, surgeons do not need to harvest bone from the iliac crest, saving the patient the risk of considerable pain, can achieve healthy bone repair and save themselves and the healthcare system time and money.
IsoTis’ products have current applications in each of the following areas:
Spinal Fusion Degenerative disc disease, characterized by a progressive compression of the intervertebral discs, afflicts nearly half of Americans between 40 and 60 years of age and approximately 90% of Americans older than 60.
Trauma Five-hundred thousand orthopedic fractures occur annually in the United States and eventually progress to delayed union or nonunion fractures. Among fractures not resulting from osteoporosis, sports injuries and automobile and heavy machinery accidents are the main causes.
Joint Revision Hip, knee, shoulder, and small joint replacements are common orthopedic procedures designed to replace the function of joints, usually due to advanced osteoarthritis
Bone Void Filling, Iliac Crest Backfills When a tumor is removed, or another type of bone void exists, bone graft or a bone substitute will usually be used to replace lost bone volume and provide an osteoconductive material to encourage bone growth. |
